History

On the 23rd of December 2005 S.V.A.T.(Studie Vereniging Advanced Technology) Astatine was founded by Stefan van Nierop, Brigitte Bruijns, Mark van Schagen and Jouke Hofman, together they formed the first board of the association. Before, all Advanced Technology students were members of S.V. Arago, but there was a demand for a separate association.

In 2006 Astatine participated for the first time with an Advanced Technology (AT) student only team in the Batavierenrace. They called the team the Ateam, and from then on every time Astatine participated in a sports tournament the team would be named the Ateam. As a closure of the year, an Astatine-BBQ was held. This BBQ became a tradition in which the BBQ-committee would be the candidate board for the following year.

During the next academic year, 2006-2007, the first ATtentie was written, the symposium, trip abroad, and prom were organised for the first time, and Astatine’s first birthday was celebrated!
The symposium was organised in collaboration with C.T.S.G. Alembic and the trip abroad, which destination was Denmark, was organised with S.V. Arago.

In 2007-2008 the BuCom was founded, a committee which organises a yearly trip to a destination within Europe exclusively for Astatine members. The destination of this years trip was Leuven, Oxford and London.

In December 2007 our borrel committee, the BOSS, was established and on January 9th they organised the first drink in the Tombe, in the Hogekamp.

During the academic year, 2009-2010, Advanced Technology was changed to an English bachelor. Therefore, also Astatine and the teachers would have to speak English. With much effort from the 5th board, this was accomplished by the end of the year.

The year after the first lustrum of Astatine was celebrated. The lustrum had as theme ‘Small going big’, and from the 9th of February to the 16th of February all kind of fun activities were organised.

During this 2011 the borrel location was also moved from the Tombe in the Hogekamp to the TAP(Triple-A-Penthouse) in Carré, named after the three associations we would share this location with, S.V.A.T. Astatine together with C.T.S.G. Alembic(Chemical Engineering) and S.V. Arago(Applied Physics).

In 2015, the second lustrum was celebrated! With the theme ‘numbers’, the diversity of AT students was celebrated, and it was combined with an amazing month full of activities. The 11th board, due to their great work as a part-time board, got the University-wide ‘More Than a Degree Award’ for Best Part Time board!

In the past 10 years, Astatine had only been for Advanced Technology students. However, in 2016 it was time to broaden our association and include more members. In February of 2016, the Master study Nanotechnology became part of Astatine, and these students could now call themselves a proud member of S.V.A.T. Astatine!

To keep in line with the internationalisation of the association, as well as the inclusion of Nanotechnology, it was decided that the abbreviation S.V.A.T. (Studie Vereniging Advanced Technology) should be changed to S.A. (Study Association). From the 6th of September 2018, the name of the association is officially S.A. Astatine.
